Three Bars in Singapore

A few weeks ago, I travelled to Singapore – home to late night roti prata, my beloved extended family, and some of the neatest bars around. Whilst in town, I visited a few new haunts and was impressed by their attention to detail – ice cubes embossed with logos and coasters not made of cardboard. If you’re in the Lion City, then make sure to check these out!

28 Hong Kong Street (Clark Quay)

The 14th best bar in the world (2016), 28 is cool, calm and collected. Hand-shaved ice (or ice imprinted with the 28 logo) awaits in a quiet street behind an unassuming entrance. The drinks are classy and the mac & cheese balls are just as decadent as they should be. The lighting is dark and the mood is polished. The menu changes three times a year, so try it out pronto. www.28hks.com

Highball (Kampong Bahru)

Gin & Tonic, Whiskey & Coke, Pimms & a hot Summer’s day. A highball is a drink made up of two things – one alcoholic and one complimentary mixer. Highball is the first highball cocktail bar in Singapore and serves quality, simple highballs done well, by an all-female crew. It’s relaxed and comes with complimentary snacks (always important) of house-made pickles and addictively spicy crisps. www.highball.com.sg

The Other Room (Orchard Rd)

The hidden black curtain, tucked in the corner of the Marriot Hotel’s shiny lobby, could easily be mistaken for a janitor’s area or perhaps a maintenance cover-up. But behind the swathe of fabric is an intimate, small bar with dark corners and a menu of prohibition-style cocktails. Your visit begins with a complimentary serve of espresso, served in a small glass bottle with a dropper. Sip on this whilst perusing the menu, lit with a small red torch (shaped like a pistol) that comes attached to it. The cocktails here are inventive and surprising.
